Week 9

In week 9 we were taught many things such as how to reduce the noise in audio, make the voice sounds more clear and smoothen it out

To reduce the noise first i capture the noise print and then selects all the part that wants all the noise removed.

We were also taught on how to control the voice spikes, we do it by selecting the part of the spike and we can manually lower to make the voice better.

We can also edit the voice manually to remove unnecesary noises like breathing noise to make the audio better, or we can also use autogate to remove the noise below the threshold.

Week 10

In week 10 we had our class online, in the class we were asked to create a recording of a radio show we were given a few scripts we can use, In the class assignment i choose to make a promotion of a SUV.

I did recording from my home and this is the result i come up with

Assignment 2: A Story Of Malin Kundang

Story's Origin

Malin Kundang is an Indonesian folk tale that tells the story of an unfilial child who forgets his roots and disrespects his mother after gaining wealth and success. Originating from West Sumatra, the tale serves as a moral lesson about the consequences of ingratitude and disrespect toward one’s parents.

The story follows Malin Kundang, a poor boy raised by a loving single mother. Despite their struggles, his mother supports him with unwavering dedication. As Malin grows up, he dreams of leaving his village to seek fortune and promises his mother he will return to share his success. However, after years away, Malin returns as a wealthy man married to a woman of high status. Ashamed of his humble origins, he denies his mother in front of his wife and the villagers. Heartbroken, his mother curses him, invoking divine punishment. The curse turns Malin into stone, a warning for future generations about the power of a parent’s love and the dire consequences of betrayal.

The tale is deeply rooted in Minangkabau culture and emphasizes the values of filial piety, humility, and respect. The stone formation on Air Manis Beach in Padang is said to resemble Malin Kundang, becoming a poignant reminder of the legend and a popular tourist attraction.

Script

Scene 1: Introduction "Long ago, in a small village by the sea, there lived a woman and her only son, Malin Kundang. They were poor, but their love was strong. Each day, they worked hard—Malin helped his mother gather fish and mend nets. He often said, 'Mother, one day, I’ll make us rich, and you’ll never have to work again.' His mother smiled, holding onto his promise."

Scene 2: Malin Leaves Home "One morning, Malin stood by the shore, ready to leave on a small boat. His mother’s eyes were filled with tears, but she said, 'Take care of yourself, my son.' Malin held her hands tightly and replied, 'I will return, Mother. I’ll make you proud.' The boat drifted away, and his mother watched until it disappeared. Each day after, she prayed for his safety and success."

Scene 3: Malin Returns "Years passed, and one day, a grand ship docked at the village. A wealthy man in fine clothes stepped off, with his elegant wife by his side. Villagers gathered in awe. The frail mother, hearing the news, rushed to the harbor. When she saw him, her heart leapt. 'Malin! My son, you’ve returned!' she cried out with joy."

Scene 4: A Cold Reunion "But Malin turned away. His wife scoffed, 'This poor woman is your mother?' Ashamed, Malin replied, 'I have no mother!' His mother’s joy turned to heartbreak. She fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face. 'Malin, how could you forget me? I raised you with love!' But Malin walked away, ignoring her pleas."

Scene 5: The Mother’s Curse "Devastated, the mother lifted her hands to the sky. 'If you cannot accept me, may you turn to stone as a lesson for your ungratefulness!' Thunder roared, the sea churned, and lightning struck. Malin ran to his ship, but the waves swallowed it whole."

Scene 6: Malin Turns to Stone "The next morning, the storm was gone. On the shore stood a stone figure, shaped like Malin, gazing out to sea. The villagers murmured in sorrow, 'The curse of a mother’s love is powerful.'"

Scene 7: A Lesson for All "And so, the tale of Malin Kundang reminds us: never forget those who love and sacrifice for us. Gratitude is the greatest gift we can give in return." The script is made using ChatGPT since the teacher suggested using it

How is it made

I Started doing this project by recording the audio under a blanket with my condenser microphone with my AC off to reduce the noise made in the audio, When i reviewed and hear the audio back, the result is already pretty great with little noise, although there is still some noise, it can be easily removed by using the noise suppression and then there is no noise left. After there is no noise left i removed the breathing noises, mouse click noises, to remove unnecessary sounds to make the audio recording better.

After that i manually waveform to remove high audio spikes and lower it down to improve the noise quality.

Once the manual editing is done its finally time to go to the multitrack section and add effects there, the first effect i added there is to modify the EQ to enhance the vocal by using the Vocal Enhancer and tweaking it a bit so my sound doesn't sound to bass boosted

The next effect i add is the multiband compressor to enhance the audio and sound more professional

After that i added a DeEsser to remove the hard "S" Sound to improve the audio quality and finally i added a hard limiter since i noticed that some part of the audio is clipping

Once the normal audio is done, i splitted the audio into 4 parts: The Narrator, Malin Kundang, His wife and His mom, for all the parts except the narrator, i added a studio reverb to make it sound like they are in the open to integrate it more into the story.

For the female characters in the story, i used my own voice and a pitch shifter to make my sound more Feminine since i have no one to ask to voice act it.

Once all of the vocal is done, its time to add the music and sound effects, these are the music and sound effects i used in this assignment

Songs Used

First Scene Song : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3zLS6GnHdo&list=PLUpXAH7RFtazcDzhC-bLIWzUcYHJN-kjP&index=1

Sad Violin (Second Song)  : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X36LbZZ1P84

Laskar Pelangi (Emotional Music) Final Scene : https://youtu.be/4UEtEuI_iko?si=RMECaHskexEoKxAb

To make the sound effect and music not too overwhelming i set its volume to be very low so it wont cover the narrator and the characters voice.

Week 11

In week 11, we were given chance to showcase our work and asked for feedback, and the feedback i was given is to re record and this time under blanket to make it sound better. Other than that it was already great, Apparently my script is also to short with the recommended time being 2-3 minutes. so i generated a new script and start over again with the previous sound effect already downloaded.

Video

Once the audio is done i started working on the video, for the video we were allowed to use AI generated images. That way we dont need to draw and waste time making the video, I used an AI to generate images for the video, but the AI is very innacurate with the description and is very hard to generate great picture, Especially for the last image, a picture of malin kundang becoming a statue, it tried generating it many times and the result is very terrible, it could either the gender being misinterpreted or the statue is looking happy and is at peace.

Finally i put the audio in a editing software and place the image and added subtitles.

Reflection :

Overall i enjoyed this assignment and it taught me many things such as how to voice act nicely and how to clean up audio to make it sound better, Another thing i learned from this reflection is how to cover a song and making it good, before this assignment i tried to do it and it sound terrible and after doing this it sound way better now especially on how to fight the noise and enhancing the audio.

It also taught me on how to use my condenser microphone more correctly, producing more professional quality audio.
